When a car’s battery dies, the initial instinct is to start the vehicle by pushing it while the gear and clutch lever are engaged. This task is relatively simple to accomplish with a small hatchback, compact sedan, or SUV. However, it can become quite strenuous when dealing with a full-sized SUV that demands a significant amount of force to be pushed. A similar incident occurred in New Delhi, where approximately ten men had to push a Mercedes-Benz G-Class to get it started after its battery failed.
A video capturing this incident was uploaded to the Instagram page of ‘supercars_in_india.’ In the footage, we witness approximately ten men pushing a white-colored Mercedes-Benz G-Class, known as one of the heaviest and most powerful full-sized SUVs worldwide.

With a kerb weight of approximately 2.5 tonnes and its tall, boxy structure, the G-Class proves to be one of the most challenging SUVs to push. Nevertheless, when the battery of this formidable SUV refused to assist in cranking the engine due to discharging, the men believed there was no alternative but to resort to the conventional method of starting the SUV by pushing it.
However, the men pushing the G-Class were unaware of one crucial detail: a vehicle with an automatic transmission cannot be started simply by pushing it. Similar to all other vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class lacks a clutch pedal and has an open clutch in its gearbox. These two conditions prevent the engine from being cranked.
Given these circumstances, the only viable method to start a vehicle with an automatic transmission when its battery dies is to jump-start it.
To jump-start a vehicle’s battery, you will require another vehicle with a functional battery. The initial step involves connecting the terminals of the batteries using booster cables, allowing the transfer of energy from the operational battery to the depleted one. It’s important to ensure that the donor battery from the other vehicle does not have a higher voltage than the battery that is not in working condition. Additionally, maintaining a safe distance or gap between the two vehicles is crucial to prevent any risk of short-circuiting.
