The CNG segment grew by 52% despite an increase in the prices of CNG.

Tata Motors expects CNG-powered cars to account for 30% of total sales by 2030. The carmaker also sees the market share of EVs, CNG cars and petrol vehicles to be almost equal by the end of this decade.

Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata’s passenger vehicles division, has stated that CNG penetration is expected to rise from 10% to 25% by the end of the decade. Despite the increase in prices of CNG, the segment grew by 52% compared to the overall market growth of 27%.

Currently, there are almost 17 CNG models in the market, with around 30,000-35,000 units sold every month. Private car buyers account for 80% of the sales. Reports suggest that the share of taxi buyers has dropped in the last few years.

Tata currently offers CNG variants of the Tiago, and Tigor, while the Altroz and Punch get the brand’s latest tech which uses dual cylinders instead of a single large CNG cylinder, which otherwise takes up a lot of space in the boot. The carmaker sells around 12,000 CNG models per month.
