The Tata Motors Harrier mid-size SUV is one of the most popular models from the brand, and it recently received a new update for 2023, including ADAS and a new Dark Red Edition. However, the car’s exterior still looks the same. Reports have emerged that Tata Motors is working on a mid-cycle update of the SUV, in which it will change the design on the outside and offer it with a much-anticipated petrol motor. The company is expected to offer it with its newly introduced 1.5 L TGDi petrol powerplant.
The four-cylinder turbo petrol engine was officially displayed by the company during the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo. According to the company, this new motor can produce a peak torque of 280 Nm between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm and a power output of 170 bhp at 5,000 rpm. Additionally, Tata Motors will reportedly provide the revamped Safari and the upcoming mid-size Tata Curvv with the same petrol engine. It is anticipated that it will also be utilized in the 2025-slated ICE version of the Tata Sierra.
According to Tata, the new petrol engine has features such as dual cam phasing, a variable oil pump, and an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head, in addition to an aluminum design that boosts efficiency and economy. The water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger in the new Tata TGDi petrol engine increases the engine’s torque at lower revs for better acceleration. The new motor’s redesigned valve trains and timing chains result in minimal ownership costs. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered for the Harrier petrol variant.

Tata Motors is expected to continue offering the time-tested 2.0L turbo diesel engine, along with 6-speed manual and automated transmission choices, in addition to the new powerplant in the new Harrier Facelift. Recent updates to the diesel engine brought it into compliance with the more stringent BS6 Phase II pollution requirements. It has a maximum torque of 350 Nm and a power output of 168 horsepower. Currently, the same motor also powers the Harrier’s elder seven-seater SUV, the Safari.
Last month, the company introduced the new 2023 Dark Red Editions of the Harrier and the Safari siblings and revealed their pricing. Tata Motors launched the 2023 Harrier Dark Edition with a starting price of Rs. 21.77 lakh and the 7-seater version of the Safari Dark Edition with a starting price of Rs. 22.61 lakh. The 6-seater version will cost Rs. 22.71 lakh. Meanwhile, the standard Harrier and Safari with the much-anticipated ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems), six airbags, a 360-degree parking camera, etc. start from Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 24.07 lakh, while the Safari retails from Rs. 15.65 lakh to Rs. 25.01 lakh.
The ADAS system used by Tata includes forward collision warning, which uses audible and visual cues to warn the driver, automated emergency braking, which automatically applies the brakes when necessary, and traffic signs like speed limits and no passing prohibitions. When approaching cars are recognized, high beam assist automatically shifts from high beam to low beam. Additional features include rear collision warning, door open alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change alert.
