Mercedes-Benz Will Continue To Make V8 Engines Past 2030

In an automotive world full of change, some things will remain.

It’s no secret that we are at a crossroads in the automotive world. As more focus begins to be placed on environmental sustainability by brands, electrification has become a bigger priority for many, and in the race to carbon neutrality, it seems many brands are making the switch even quicker than previously imagined. Add to that the incredible performance of electric cars, and what you have is a sweeping change that seems to be quickly taking over the automotive landscape. However, regardless of how fast, easy, or environmentally friendly electric cars are, it will be tough to say goodbye to the gasoline-powered cars we have known and loved for so long, but apparently, at least in the case of Mercedes-Benz, we might not have to for a little longer than we thought.

Many brands are setting goals for carbon neutrality to happen by 2030, which for lots of them means that their portfolio will no longer include gasoline-powered cars. While this includes Mercedes-Benz, the V8 engine might not completely go away. Even in the future, some market conditions and regions may still be able to enjoy the classic driving experience of a V8-powered car, perhaps in applications where electric power is somehow impractical. Joerg Bartels, Vice President for vehicle development at Mercedes-Benz said to CarSales, “if there’s still a customer demand… why should we stop it?” when asked about the V8 engine. Either way, it’s good to hear that the V8 engine won’t be forced into obsoletion because while the innovation electric cars have introduced is amazing, there’s something to be said about the classic joy of a combustion engine.
