2023 Hyundai Palisade: No hybrid or electric power planned for this generation

The revamped Hyundai Palisade will need to wait until the next generation model arrives in a few years before it has the option of hybrid or electric power.

The Hyundai Palisade family SUV is not due to adopt hybrid or electric in its current guise, because the older platform that underpins this model cannot easily accomodate the future technology.

When asked about the possible introduction of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric power for the Hyundai Palisade, Hyundai Australia’s chief product planner, Andrew Tuitahi, told Australian media “not in this generation”.

Instead, the current generation Palisade will in the meantime continue with its existing 2.2-litre turbo diesel all-wheel-drive and 3.8-litre petrol V6 front-wheel-drive options – both backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Any form of electrified power for the Hyundai Palisade will need to wait for the next generation model change due in about three or four years.

The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 7 – a larger SUV twin to the just-released Hyundai Ioniq 5 – is due on sale in Australia by the end of 2023, though exact timing is yet to be formally confirmed.

A fuel-saving hybrid variant of the Hyundai Santa Fe – which used a similar powertrain to the Kia Sorento Hybrid – is scheduled to arrive in Australia by the end of this year.

The Hyundai Santa Fe moved to a newer platform in 2020, which allows the integration of a hybrid powertrain.

This newer architecture also underpins the Kia Sorento, Kia Carnival and Kia Sportage, along with the Hyundai Staria van and Hyundai Tucson SUV.

In contrast, the Hyundai Palisade continues to use the previous-generation underpinnings, which the company says is less suitable for electrification.
